…categories and more. It makes a good case for the promotion of Sake, and it is great to see Wine Spectator advocating for Sake. However, though the article gets much that is correct, there are a few bits which were incorrect or misleading. I'll try to provide some clarifications on these matters.

Nigori:

On page 71, the article notes that nigori is " unfiltered," and that is incorrect, though it is a common error. Usually Sake undergoes a charcoal filtration, and if …

…much more refreshing take on the subject than those of us who think scores are the spawn of the devil. He analyzed the scores that 29 California cabernet sauvignons and red blends received in a recent Wine Spectator, and found that that the wines that mentioned mocha in the tasting notes got at least 92 points; those that didn't didn't break 89. Yes, it's a small sample size, and so on and so forth, but telling nonetheless.

…Cá del Bosco. Maurizio Zanella was good with the press. He made the cover of the Wine Spectator in the 1980's. He had a heliport. He flashed a great smile - the cameras loved him. And his wines?

His wines were not understood as much then as they are now. Which is not to say a whole hell of a lot more now. But for some reason, the company pressed on. Sold to the Santa Margherita group. With effective marketing and momentum from the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio, the wine found its way …

…are collecting a data - some 12 000 tasting notes from places like the Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Decanter. The words used will be compiled in a database so we can tell how they're used, reports Jamie Goode of the Wine Anorak blog (whose notes will also be included. It's not so much that this isn't a good idea, but that I'm not sure what it will accomplish. Do we really need to know how many times leathery is used for a red wine? Or …

…the 15 minutes that was allotted to me. No, what is kind of bothering me was the press coverage. The Wine Spectator made a giant leap into the Italian pudding, they showed up. The Wine enthusiast folks were also there, although Monica Larner, their Italian reporter, reported that she was in France . Odd, huh?

The Italians were there, the bloggers, the many different reports and newsletters and reviews. I think I even saw poor Daniel Thomases nodding asleep in the …

Forestry recognized Franco Biondi Santi's grandfather Ferruccio as the "inventor of Brunello." In 1994, Decanter awarded 10/10 (a perfect score) to the 1891, a wine that was 103 years old at the time. In 1999, Wine Spectator rated the 1955 Riserva as one of the "best twelve wines produced in the world in the twentieth century."

…'Images Contest in 2011 and well-known in the wine industry for his photographic contributions to the Wine Spectator, Decanter or Vigneron magazines. Particularly pleased to be solicited for this project, François agreed to give HIS own vision of Brane-Cantenac, an original vision indeed, since he chose to pay homage to all those men and women who are usually invisible while contributing daily to the production of a great wine. "I really wanted to do something different, less …

There was a tie for sixth place that included Marvin Shanken (publisher of Wine Spectator), Robert Parker (CEO and Chairman of The Wine Advocate Inc.), and David Lillie, a partner in Chambers Street Wines (although some votes came in for CSW generally or also named Jamie Wolff, his business partner).

The next tier saw a tie as well that included: Levi Dalton ( Eater.com contributor); Alice Feiring (writer); Pascaline Lepeltier (sommelier, Rouge Tomate); and Kermit Lynch

…passion for it. Secondly, only a few people do it professionally for a living. We have the staffs at Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Decanter, and Wine & Spirits, Matt Kramer, Jonne Bonne, Dave McIntyre, Eric Asimov and Sandra Silfen. Maybe I missed about four others. That's it. There are fewer and fewer jobs for wine writers than ever before. And oh, by the way, in most cases, the pay isn't enough to eat at McDonalds.

…back to my darling Magdelaine. When speaking to Christian Moueix at a Wine Spectator event years ago you could tell how much affection he had for the estate. It ages like someone from Okinawa. Gracefully and much longer than you'd think. Figeac and Magdelaine are what I think of when I think of classically styled St. Emilion. Magdelaine is still affordable, clocking in at under $ 100.

Chateau Moulin de Tricot - I could fill half this list with Neal Rosenthal's …
