Bodegas Monteabellón is located in the heart of Ribera del Duero and is made up 52 hectares of vineyards (mainly Tempranillo) around the township of Nava de Roa. The inspiration behind this relatively new venture is Isaac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia ex- winemaker, Marino Garcia, with whom he has worked for several vintages.

Clearly the aptitude for winemaking is hereditary here, although the Monteabellón style is richer and more approachable and forthright …

…wine is the top of Abacela's line, and was inspired by the iconic Vega Sicilia Unico. This is produced in a Gran Reserva style, though aged in French rather than American oak. This was an amazing wine, and reminded me of some high end Spanish Tempranillo wines. From its alluring aromas to its complex melange of flavors, this wine impressed from start to finish. I think it was very drinkable now, and will continue to remain strong for years to come. It is difficult to describe …

Tempranillos and this is the top of their line. Inspired by the iconic Vega Sicilia Unico , Earl has long desired to make a Gran Reserva style, and the great vintage of 2005 provided him an opportunity. 2005 also happened to be an excellent vintage in Spain too. One key difference between Spanish Gran Reservas and the Paramour is that Earl chose to use French oak rather than American. The Paramour spent about two years in French oak barrels ( 30% new) and then four years in …

…Xavier Ausas Lopez de Castro, Technical Director for Bodegas Vega Sicilia. "We may dress differently and wear different styles of clothes, yet we are both human beings," he says, explaining the often dramatic differences between individual parcels.

In addition to his responsibilities as technical director for Vega Sicilia, Xavier is also quite the philosopher, with the gift of using vivid anecdotes to explain his key points.

Now my first experience with Vega Sicilia

With Reserva Especial, Vega Sicilia gives a nod to the past as it is based on a long standing Spanish tradition of blending vintages to make a house style. The 2013 release of Reserva Especial is a blend of three vintages (1994, 1999 and 2000). As a blend of three outstanding Unicos, the Reserva Especial is the archetypical Vega Sicilia.

Like López de Heredia in Rioja, Vega Sicilia have their own unique way of making wines: old vines, low yields, Spanish and Bordeaux grapes and long ageing. The main reason for the individual style at Vega Sicilia is that they were a winery in the middle of nowhere for 120 years with absolutely no regional rivals. They managed to survive traditionally without having to compete with the Joneses (I am not sure of the Spanish equivalent?) until the area fashionably sprung into life …

SIPPED: varsity tasting

The Oxford-Cambridge rivalry has played out over wine glasses for over 60 years: this year's tasting included a Vega Sicilia 1953. En garde, you "coconut," "tobacco leaf," with "horse manure character!" Oh wait, those were the tasting notes... [ NYT ]

SLUSH , you huskies! A wine from South Dakota will greet Iditarod competitors at the finishing line. #winesworthmushingfor [ ArgusLeader.com ] Oh, a previous …

So today Pablo Alvarez Mezquiriz, Consejero Delegado of Bodegas Vega Sicilia, gave a fabulous tutored tasting of his wines including the Vega Sicilia Unico 1981, 1994, and 2004 along with the Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial made from the three best years: 1990, 1996, and 1999.

We also had a chance to try the Valbuena 1998 and 2008.

What was interesting about this tasting is that the "aged" wines showed so very young. The color was rich garnet, and quite intense, …
