So today Pablo Alvarez Mezquiriz, Consejero Delegado of Bodegas Vega Sicilia, gave a fabulous tutored tasting of his wines including the Vega Sicilia Unico 1981, 1994, and 2004 along with the Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial made from the three best years: 1990, 1996, and 1999.

We also had a chance to try the Valbuena 1998 and 2008.

What was interesting about this tasting is that the "aged" wines showed so very young. The color was rich garnet, and quite intense, …

Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay 1925, Marqués de Riscal 1946, 1950, 1964 and 1982, Viña Tondonia 1961, 1964 and 1970 form part of the Fine and Rare wine sale on 6 December. A case of Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial 1925 is expected to fetch £3000-£3600, while lots of Ribera del Duero's Vega Sicilia dating back to the 1950s have estimates of £500-£600 per three bottles. South and unsuitable quality soils further into the plain closer to the mountains, this means that Vega Sicilia has remained relatively consistent in terms of area under vine over the years. This does not suggest, by any means, that this winery is standing still with regards to their continued development; in fact, Vega Sicilia is constantly evolving, improving and learning.

After teasing us with Alion 1991-2003 and other Vega Sicilia offerings in 2007, owner Pablo Á lvarez and winemaker Javier Ausás came to London in June to share 26 vintages of their top wine, Vega Sicilia Único, including the unreleased 2005 - and their new, unreleased rioja - in a headily.

Pablo Álvarez (pictured) of Ribera del Duero's most respected bodega Vega Sicilia has finally announced what the two wines produced by the company's new enterprise in Rioja will be called. As is the current fashion in Rioja, the term Reserva will be eschewed. The top wine will be called Macan.
