Oscar's Joven is a very grown-up wine, despite its youthful name... Made from young Tempranillo and completely devoid of oak, this wine has a natural exuberance and beautifully soft tannins.

The perfumes of violets and hedgerow lead to a velvety palate which is structurally more complex than one may expect from the Joven descriptor, the fine tannins and balanced acidity lending authority and length.

It's always good to see Hunter Valley explorations of varieties like sangiovese and tempranillo. Charm is always part of the equation with these varieties, and charm has always been part of the Hunter Valley shtick.

The absolutely delightful López de Heredia family are traditional to the core, making wine as they have been since 1877 and refusing to compromise in any way. Pale imitators have cut corners, most specifically by reducing ageing time for Reservas, but here the wine has had its full six years in American oak, contemplating its future in the famously cob-webbed cellars, Stygian avant la letter.

The blend, as usual, is made from three quarters Tempranillo with the balance shared evenly …

With these plantings, Grace has moved away from the pergola tradition to vertical shoot position ( VSP) training. Yield is sacrificed for sugar. Thus the 2013 Cuvée Misawa Koshu from Akeno, a delicious wine, achieved 11.5 percent alcohol without chaptalisation (the process of adding sugar to unfermented must to promote fermentation), at a yield of …

Both the Old Vines and Vina Valoria labels produce excellent wines, and I especially liked the reserva and gran reserva of each, which showed incredible concentration of fruit and very traditional winemaking. Export manager …

…why; an outstanding blend from a superlative vintage, the 2005 shows off all the versatility of fine Tempranillo, its seductive ripe strawberry fruit and balsamic overtures heralding mid-palate richness which will be a perfect match for Easter's roast. Peerless and timeless, this is archetypical classic Rioja.

…value from Spain, for under $ 20. This is a blend with 50% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Syrah. I get violet on the nose, black pepper and cherry taste. Writing this up reminds me to pick up another bottle of this one!
