…American AVA's are not restricted to specific grapes. It may not be traditional to grow Tempranillo in Napa or Cabernet in Santa Maria, but you're welcome to do so. The AVA just specifies where the grapes are grown, and it's up to you to make your case for the quality of the end product. And central to the growing significance of terroir has been wineries' efforts to support their claims to quality by geographic designation. After all, while Cabernet-Sauvignon

La Mancha, Spain. 13.5% alc. 100% tempranillo. This you have to buy by the case. Clean, brave medium ruby color; fresh, bright, spicy, a little earthy and funky; tempranillo as Beaujolais-Villages; but with smoke and dust, leather, slightly roasted and macerated black cherries, raspberries and plums; very dry with notable tannins after a few minutes but easily drinkable. Now through 2015. Very Good. About $ 9.

Aragonez, Trincadeira) and a single varietal of Aragonez ( tempranillo) Vila Santa Aragonez 2011 which spends six months in small new French oak barrels. The 2011 single varietal Trincadeira and Syrah are vinified in the same way and they are all delicious.

Tons de Duorum Red 2011 is made from a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and 20% Tempranillo and aged in second and third year French oak barrels for six months - very elegant. My favorite was the 2011 Marques…

Regarding the Tempranillo, Torres already has 400 vines of this variety in the vineyard Don Miguel . He is expanding other areas outside the vineyard and plans to create its first 100% Tempranillo wine this year 2013. These last two years, he developed a mix of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Syrah. He said that "the Syrah gives both structure and body to the wine, but it's the Tempranillo that brings the complexity".

The original wine 100% Albariño

Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva 2001 is a delectable wine produced from Tempranillo grapes ( 90%) from 40 year-old vines located in Briñas, Villalba and Labastida that are perfectly complemented by a 10% touch of Graciano vines from Melchorón and Rodezno Briones vineyards, all of which belong to the DOC of La Rioja.

In February 2002, the wine was transferred to the self-made, 4 year-old American oak barrels being racked through the traditional barrel-to-barrel method for …

…Toro 2010, Catalunya. 13.5% alc. 100% tempranillo. Dark to medium ruby color; warm, spicy and macerated, a little fleshy, a bit exotic; ripe but spare notes of fresh black currants with dried cherries and raspberries; black and blue fruit flavors, grainy tannins and bright acidity wrapped around a core of mint and meat; a savory and sanguine wine that yearns for a full-flavored steak or grilled sausages. Through 2014. Very Good+. About $ 11, a Raving Great Value .

After tasting the 2012 vintage of Vida Nova Rosé yesterday, a fruity blend of Syrah and Aragonez which was bottled last week, I say someone should bring it and Sir Cliff Richard to Cape Town. A spring concert at Kirstenbosch, perhaps? If Woolies can promote the Parlotones around wine, a solid gold tourist magnet for [...]

…available all over the world. The range on show includes the regular Rioja ranges of young Tempranillo, Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva, but also two Cava wines - including a rather tasty rosé.

Campo Viejo may be a large volume brand, but I tasted the range recently and was actually pleasantly surprised by the style - approachable, but with some surprisingly complex fruit and elegant tannins. I think recent vintages are more interesting than they were a couple of years ago, and …
