Calaveras County, famous for its role in the California gold rush, is situated within the Sierra Foothills appellation and located approximately 60 miles southeast of Sacramento. Winemaker Scott Klann, along with his wife Melanie and partners, started their own label, Newsome-Harlow, in 2000. The Newsome-Harlow label specializes in the production of small lots of [primarily] single-vineyard designated wines from Calaveras County grown fruit and other nearby areas. Scott also makes …

The Sierra Foothills have long been known as the hidden gem of zinfandel production, but did you know there are other secret lairs out there? Euclid Wines , a small producing winery in Napa, is producing some wonderful examples of terroir driven wine.

This 2010 100% Syrah comes from a a vineyard at about 1000 feet in elevation, near a large reservoir which allowed for cool nights in the otherwise hot climate. A silky syrah with a pop of juicy acid, there were beautiful dark …

…in California's coastal regions, which is my beat. I no longer cover the vast Sierra Foothills— Virginie Boone does that—and I miss tasting those hearty, heady Zins.

Zinfandel accounted for 8.9% of all grapes crushed in California in 2011, giving it third place (after Cab and Chardonnay). While California acreage of Zinfandel is very wide—the #2 most planted red wine grape, after Cabernet Sauvignon—a lot of it is in the Central Valley counties of San Joaquin

…different flavor profiles you can find, from raisiny ripe Paso Robles to spicy & racy Sierra Foothills, to brambly blackberry punch of Dry Creek. What better way to taste them than at the 2013 Zinfandel Festival!

SFGate's Top 100 Wines of 2012 hit the interwebs yesterday and is a must-read. It's loaded with intriguing wines to seek out, courtesy of Jon Bonné ( @ jbonne )

Only one varietal Mourvèdre made the list, but it's one I've been itching to get my hands on — the 2011 La Clarine Farm Cedarville Sierra Foothills Mourvèdre, described thusly:

Mourvedre doing a delicious impersonation of Jura wine.

Yum.

FYI, there are two other wines on the list with Mourvèdre in the blend:

I think I first wrote about the wines of Renaissance Vineyards and Winery in 2001, when I mentioned in what was then my weekly newspaper column (distributed nationally by the Scripps Howard News Service until 2004) the Renaissance Late Harvest Riesling 1993 and, under the winery's second label, the Da Vinci Late Harvest Riesling 1987. In the succeeding 11 years, I have reviewed numerous wines from the small producer in the remote North Yuba appellation of the Sierra Foothills

Sonoma County produced the best Zinfandels. (Well, a lot of people argued for the Sierra Foothills, and Amador County specifically, but once I became exposed to them, I often found them a little too hot and sweet for my tastes.) I like a Napa Valley style of Zinfandel, which I find drily elegant, as exemplified by wineries such as Storybook Mountain, Rubicon's Edizione Pennino, Schulz Lampyridae from Howell Mountain, and V. Sattui's Black-Sears, also from Howell Mountain…

…on the lesser-known, so you'll find (a totally rockin'!) Barbera from the Sierra Foothills, a soulful Dry Creek Valley Grenache, an electric/plush Chenin Blanc, a nervy/floral Mendocino Gewurztraminer, a cool Central Coast Roussanne, and more. Creperie Saint-Germain has generously agreed to create two new flavors of savory crepes for pairing with white and red wines, respectively, and we'll also have lounge seating to rest your soles before heading back …

Gur-Arieh's winery is in the Sierra Foothills region of California. He produces a variety of wines including Sauv Blanc, Verdelho, Roussane, Zinfandel, Syrah, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and a number of blends. His winemaking philosophy is for very drinkable fruit-forward wines with great balance and low acidity and tannins. He also thinks it's important to keep his wines' alcohol levels in check. A taste of his Syrah and …
