…Yet it's the soil and aspect that is key here ... the soil is clay and gravel and as typical in Sauternes there is a mix of young and old vines. It takes pickers between five to seven tries to collect the perfect botrytized grapes. To keep the acidity and freshness some non-botrytized grapes are used as well - it depends on the vintage.
Much work is done in the vineyard all year. From now (April) to July, Eric and his workers are occupied with turning the soil. Then when the vines grow …
The Commanderie du Bontemps ( Médoc, Graves and Sauternes wine brotherhood) organized the event with Vinexpo, the bi-annual wine trade fair, so you can imagine it was a "who is who" of the international wine world filled with journalists, the trade, chateau owners, and 1500 guests in all , will coincide with the " Fête de la Fleur" and 1500 guests to celebrate wine. Today the Commanderie du Bontemps is one of the oldest and largest wine brotherhoods in France…
Sauternes wine is usually a blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc, but the common thread is always that the grapes involved are botryitzed, or infected with botrytis cinerea , aka "The Noble Rot." That's right, the grapes themselves are actually rotten at harvest.
But the wine they make? Spectacular. Delicious. Enthralling. Gorgeous . From rot comes beauty. Just like with Seinfeld .
Here are some botrytized dessert wines I can easily recommend:

So the Tasting of Sauternes and Barsac this year was at La Tour Blanche -- very generous of them to host the tasting this year!
As always, I am in one of the two "blind" tasting groups which means that we all taste the wines and write our notes without knowing the winery. The other groups taste in an "open" fashion."
Tasting blind is very important to a journalist ... especially if one know the people and families behind the wineries, and could be swayed in this fashion.

Dinner last night was at a beautiful Sauternes wine estate, Chateau Guirard. Its drive is striking, lined with tall trees. One of the owners, Xavier Planty, greeted us warmly & cordially hosted another elaborate meal that lasted four hours. Today, the last event was a wine tour. I chose the Medoc, legendary red wine region on the left bank of the Gironde River.
In addition to lovely tastings & gracious winemakers, the tour was also higly enjoyable because it offered the chance …

…Botrytized? If you don't know, the fungus that rots Semillon grapes to give Sauternes wine its distinct sweetness is called botrytis cinerea , or "noble rot." So it is with Ferrari-Carano's Eldorado Gold.
As rich and golden as its namesake, the Eldorado Gold gives off the most incredible white raisins and vanilla on the nose. There's a hint of honey, and a chalklike minerality that could have come straight off the white terrace out front of the villa.

…lower temperatures will be chosen to preserve the flavour of sweet wines and sparkling wines like Sauternes, Muscat, Champagne, Cava or Asti. Although I like to have the first at 8 º C, I recognize that these two degrees more do much when it comes to the tasting.
