…34: A rough edge at the beginning yields some herbal and vegetal elements in this Rhône blend of six white grapes. The winemaker made his first wine at the age of thirteen .

Entrée

Smoked Ostrich: With roasted root vegetables, gorgonzola mousse, herb port reduction, homemade sultana/apricot chutney and an oven baked spicy potato chip

Excellent ostrich, and I'll be on the lookout for some thicker steaks to try and recreate this dish in the future.

…mistaken this for a Bordeaux. (And certainly more like a Bordeaux than a Rhone, which I'd have expected with a " Shiraz-like" grape.) My first thought on spinning this was, "Wow. Funky!" There's a real whiff of earthiness on the nose, coupled with a nice bit of cherry. I'd call it medium bodied, in line with the aforementioned French doppelganger. Good dark fruit on the tongue with some gradually-building tannins. There's plenty of length on the tannic, …

…reds are great as well, been drinking a lot of those recently, especially syrah from the northern Rhône.

Carrie: Okay perfect, you will write everything down.

Bill: Not everything. I'll give you a few specific wines and for the rest just find wines you want to try in the same style. But bring an ice bucket, hopefully it will be hot.

Carrie: We keep the whites in the fridge.

Bill: No, it's for your reds. If it's hot out, make sure it is always handy so you can dunk …

But they should. The Little James comes from a top-notch Rhone producer that mixes wine made with old grapes and wine made from current vintage fruit . The result is a $ 10 Hall of Fame wine: Classic Rhone barnyard aromas, red grenache fruit, some spiciness, and more tannin and acid than I expected -- a rough, though not unpleasant, peasant finish that speaks to a more traditional style of winemaking. A food wine for barbecue and burgers; highly recommended.

Region El Dorado County Fair! Called " Merlot of the Rhone" by the winemakers of Crystal Basin Cellars, this wine shows depth, complexity and a rich, round mouth feel along with hints of white pepper, blueberries, a peppery finish and the trademark dustiness of the Mourvedre varietal. This wine favors Bandol, the benchmark Mourvedre-based wine from Franc, but with the Sierra Foothill signature of medium weight and low tannins. The grapes are from the very small Faetta Vineyard…

…of Cabernet Sauvignon. I've often thought that Syrah and other Rhône grapes should do very well in the intense heat of the Napa Valley - I bet that Stony Hill's Syrah is excellent and I hope to taste it one day.

Tasting these wines I could feel how different they are from the typical Napa wine. These are made to showcase the juice from the grapes grown on their hillside vines, and the soils they come from. Nothing more, nothing less. Now that I've seen the gorgeous …

One might assume having tasted ten Northern Rhone red wines from the same 2010 vintage and two new world 2010 Syrahs side-by-side, blind, that the Rhone wines showed as siblings while the two new world Syrahs tagged along as genetically distinct and adopted brothers. As our Boston tasting group discovered blind tasting the 2010 Northern Rhone vintage's cool spring, hot and cold summer, small yields, and long ripening that protected acids and allowed places of origin to shine through in each wine, stylistic commonality was in short supply.

…in a long slender Bordeaux bottle and to smell of blackcurrant. This one comes in a Rhone bottle and smells of meat, dried herbs and menthol. If I had to guess I would have thought it was mostly C. franc, it has than sinewy, lean hardness instead of the expected cloud of cassis. I've scribbled quiet, dialled down, different. . . but then first impressions are often wrong. The emphasis seems distinct and separate from its geographic peers - more woody and herbal, inky almost. . . Assertive …
