The Calvert vineyard is shared between three of NZ's leading Pinot Noir producers: Pyramid Valley, Craggy Range and Felton Rd. The vineyard is farmed Biodynamically (by Felton Rd) and each partner gets an equal split of the fruit to craft the way they wish. Pyramid Valley's philosophy is based around as little intervention …

…floral-type scents that resonated in my memory. The wine, tasted in a small blind line-up, turned out to be Pyramid Valley Vineyards' 2010 Angel Flower Pinot Noir. It was grown and made by Mike and Claudia Weersing on their biodynamically farmed property in North Canterbury, on New Zealand's South Island. …giants of NZ Pinot Noir. (Craggy Range, Felton Road and Pyramid Valley) All farmed Biodynamically. This is the warmest region PV work with and it is reflected in this wines powerful fruit core of Blackberries and dark cherry. Rich and unctuous on the palate, yet retaining freshness and drive. Some dark earthiness and ripe silky tannin. Probably the best cross-over wine for California Pinot drinkers interested in trying Pyramid Valleys offerings.

Pinot Noir is looking smashing - I found wines of great intensity, minerality, slender profiles and savoury notes. With riesling, pinot noir works …
…it was time for what I thought would be the main event, cracking open these two pinot noirs from Pyramid Valley Vineyards . These pinot noirs, called " Earth Smoke" and " Angel Flower" are from adjacent vineyards, one of which faces north - the other facing east. I was curious to see the differences. These were both from the 2008 vintage, so they may have been a little young. Still, I thought it would be tasty. We decided to pair them up with grilled beef medallions …
