…Clos de La Roche, including Dujac, Rousseau, Ponsot, and Lignier. On this night we drank two bottles of Lignier Clos de la Roche, and both were great wines. I've read that Clos de la Roche gives one of the longest lived red wines in Burgundy, and that as per its name (roche = rock), the wines show pronounced minerality. The 1998 Clos de la Roche was superb, with intensely savory and smoky aromas and flavors that were completely shot through with stone. I loved this …

Condit auction in New York. The auction lots included a rare collection of Ponsot's Clos St Denis from 1945-1971, but the domaine didn't make the wine until 1982. It also included a domaine bottled Clos de la Roche from 1929, but domaine bottling did not start at Ponsot until 1934. Similarly, the American collector Bill Koch is involved in a number of legal cases against auction houses, most famously regarding the Thomas Jefferson collection offered by Rodenstock.

…with the fritters. I had put away several cases of 1981's from Mongeard and Ponsot in my Vineyard Brands days because both vignerons had beautifully farmed a vintage with heavy spring frosts, frequent storms during June and July and damaging hail in August. However, they saved their harvest of a tiny crop by careful navigation during a difficult September. The trade and the press wrote it off: "A vintage to forget." I'm glad that I didn't. And best of all, …

A key part of Kurniawan's undoing may have been bidding on a '47 Ponsot Clos St. Denis that he thought was from Domaine Ponsot but was actually from the unrelated Christine Ponsot. Cornwell posts the actual listing in the 2004 Acker, Merrall Catalogue, showing it simply as " Ponsot," adding, "it makes you wonder if [auctioneer] John Kapon ever really looked at the bottle in question." Cornwell points out that Kurniawan engaged in a bidding …

Laurent Ponsot of Domaine Ponsot in Burgundy has spoken out about the Rudy Kurniawan wine fraud case, claiming he knows the identity of an accomplice in the collector's alleged crimes. " Rudy has been advised by someone with extensive knowledge of Burgundy. I know who it is, but in the current state of the investigation, I keep this information secret," Ponsot told Vanity Fair magazine. One person thought to be a possible accomplice is Kurniawan's Burgundy-born…

Leroy, Meo Camuzet, Emmanuel Rouget, Leflaive, Ponsot, etc

Others

Cristal, D 'Yquem, Dom Perignon, Egon Muller, Etienne Guigal, Joseph Phelps, Vega Sicilia, etc

I took a quick glance at the price list and though there are substantial discounts, the bulk of the wines are the newer 2006 and 2007 which I am not particularly excited about.

The Sauternes half bottles of 2005 de Fargues and 2005 Suduiraut, did perk my interest.

…feds have charged Kurniawan with selling a bottle of 1929 Ponsot but Ponsot only started estate bottling in 1934. If one were to make and sell fake wine, don't you think you'd take the time to make sure that the wines you were counterfeiting actually existed? And what of the auctioneers, did they not this or did they turn a blind eye to it? It will be interesting to learn more details as they emerge.

For those who think the FBI just roots around for terrorists, there's apparently …
