…more and more popular as a single varietal and where as Petit Verdot can resemble Petit Sirah or Zinfandel in how big and bold it is, Cabernet Franc's are a more elegant food friendly relative of Cabernet Sauvignon and there are dozens of good if not great examples emerging in Israel. This is one of the better examples.

…much success. An interesting blend of 45% Shiraz, 40% Petit Sirah, 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, yields a delicious wine that is very enjoyable right now due to its smooth and well integrated tannins and will continue to provide enjoyment for some years to come. Each varietal was aged separately in French and American oak for eight months before being blended, and the blend spent an additional eight months in oak prior to bottling. A delightfully aromatic nose redolent of red, …

…composition. In this case, this wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petit Sirah. Honestly, I found it a little too fruity for my tastes. It reminded me a great deal of the Merlot I mentioned before, although it's got a little more structure. I got berries and cherries here with a tannic finish. All in all, I think it's decent but unremarkable on its own. Like the merlot, however, it would work as a table wine if you've got some heartier fare on the table. I had it with …

Merlot with a little Petit Sirah, Syrah, and Carignane

$ 16, 13.6% abv.

28,000 cases made

A soft and supple California Merlot with a good black cherry profile and just a bit of black pepper. Mellow tannins and a brief, fruity finish. It was a good pairing: a softer red with a more aggressive poultry, though I think that the seasoning of the quail would have been too strong for a Pinot Noir.

I took four veal chops and dusted them with a little Rendezvous dry …

Sangioveses, an off-beat blend of Tempranillo, Merlot and Petit Sirah from Paso Robles, and a Zinfandel. I can see some of you shaking your heads. WTF? But listen to me, this can be really cool.

For one thing, since it's blind, you have the instructive pleasure of trying to determine what each wine is. You can't do that if you know you're tasting all Oakville Cabernets. In the wacko flight, you have to concentrate hard. Some of these California Pinots are big, …

Petit Sirah. It has added more complexity and quality to the flavor of the wine. The small berries of the Petit Sirah with their high skin-to-juice ratio, blackberry fruity character mixed with black pepper notes, add deep color and body to the Sangiovese.

TERI: It is impossible to pick just one favorite pairing because DAX pairs beautifully with all types of dishes and personal tastes. Roasted meats, chicken, mesquite grilled …

…% Cabernet Franc, 20% Syrah and 20% Petit Sirah. The catch, $ 42 - now I know why some locals complain about price points.

Now for the winners. For whites, not only was the Four Corners based Guy Drew Vineyards Pinot Gris voted best White Wine, but also the Media's favorite wine. Wrong. How could my colleagues completely mess this up. In fact, the best White Wine, was the Guy Drew Vineyards No Oak Chardonnay. Seriously, Guy can make some quality …

There's a splash of Petit Sirah in this wine, which is always a good thing in my book. Black currant and blackberry, with notes of cedar, spice, and black pepper. Mild tannins with a prominent dark fruit character. Mellow but long finish, and really right at the perfect age to drink. Like a lot of the Michael David wines, this is fun and has quirky branding, but most importantly is affordable and food-friendly. This is a great weekend BBQ wine if you have the sort of gatherings where …

…% Zinfandel, 36% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Sirah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Merlot. It has a screw cap, clocks in at 13.9% alcohol by volume and retails for $ 14.

Four takeaways from this wine:

1.) The nose on this wine rocks. Way more than expected for a $ 14 wine.

2.) Think turkey day on a budget for this wine.

3.) I'm totally impressed with the quality I've seen so far from Clif Family.

4.) Overall this wine way overdelivers for the price point. …
