When I got home, I turned to The Wines of the Northern Rhone by John Livingstone-Learmonth. He writes that Alain has about one hectare (2.5 acres) of vines sprinkled over some to sites in Cornas-Reynards, Mazards, and Les Côtes, which is not enough to support his family of five children. Thus he works at a factory making garbage cans. Livingston-Learmonth writes that Alain Verset's vinification is traditional-"whole bunches fermented for 10 - 15 days in concrete …

…surprises within the state. (We'd also just come from a rodeo around the corner.) Southern and Northern New Jersey are like two different countries: the South is more conservative and far more rural; "the city" is Philadelphia, not New York. But even farther north, there is far more open land than in the caricature of the most densely populated state in the nation. I easily imagined coming back to Auburn Road, and became curious about other wineries.

To get recommendations, …

…nature for predictable results, and from his small hillside perch and humble home in the far reaches of Northern Italy commanded the attention of a global market simply by pursuing what he thought was right and ended up with wines that nobody else has come close to replicating. Alex witnessed all of this by my side first hand, with great understanding and approval. What else could a wine loving father ask for?

There is an orange wine rage going on. This week in NYC I spotted …

…60 surgeons for 3 days. Numerous are the doctors who from Mopti in Northern Mali, to Dakar, via Ouagadougou, have benefited from the generous donations of Doctor Chastan. Many are the Africans who could be operated on by laparoscopy or resuscitated from a heart attack thanks to a defribrillator which came from France by air! Micro-computers, automatic prongs, ultrasonic echographs, respirators, monitors, cardioscopes...beds,clothing, without forgetting technical training; you …

Irancy, in Northern Burgundy, had always had everything it needed except good weather. The wonderful terroir produced fantastic pinot noir with incredible mineral character. The problem was that it was so cold, they were mostly thin, weedy and rustic in a bad way.

The good news for Irancy is that the average temperature in Chablis, is nearly 1.5 degrees higher than it was a few decades ago. Winemakers aremaking wines today in weather that is similar to the what the Mâconnais had …

Although I've lived in VA for a decade now, and in the Northern VA area for 7 years, I must admit that I've never had a wine from Maryland. I'll attribute that mostly to being lazy - driving 40 minutes to a VA winery seemed much more convenient over the years. Admittedly, the closest MD winery is only an hour from my house, however, there isn't a cluster of other wineries nearby, so it would be a 2 hour round trip solely for one vineyard.

In any event, I will …
