…Bed Bath & Beyond wants to get into the specialty food business, while World Market has been stumbling financially for several years and is probably better off as part of a larger company with deeper pockets. Or so the wise guys say.
But no one has explained how a company that sells coffee makers and bedspreads is going to take to selling wine. Because there are more than a few differences between the two, and I don't think it's unfair to ask if anyone at Bed Bath …

We paired the wine with two of my favorite dishes at Market; the appetizer chopped salad has many delicious ingredients. It has crunch, richness, complexity, and sensational taste.
The small plate pepper-crusted filet medallions, served with Napa Valley's best truffled, shoestring fries, is a natural, totally complementary dish to the wine, which itself boasts truffle-y flavors. I LOVE THIS DISH and have had it at Market a half-a-dozen times in the past two months. Congratulations to …
…access to good food ingredients, via the upscale grocery stores Whole Foods and Fresh Market, the local bounty provided at the Downtown and Shelby Farms farmers markets, a network of little Asian markets, and yes, even the monolithic Kroger empire has stepped up its game at several locations to provide a wide range of options for the increasingly diverse and culinarily curious market of Memphis.
I'm excited to be within walking distance of the new second location of my beloved …
…winemaker friend pulled out some 2000 French Bordeaux for comparison and we headed to Market, in St. Helena, for what is possibly the valley's best burger.
Yes, I know, it's hard, if not impossible, to judge Bordeaux and Napa Valley Cabs at the same time; California wines, with their higher alcohol, and elevated fruit extraction, usually clobber the bejesus out of French wines at such pairings. Not because the Napa Valley Cabs are better, but because they're just …
W hen the Wine Market Council released it's 2012 Market Forecast, the numbers looked encouraging. Overall table wine consumption increased in 2011 . Core consumers (those who enjoy wine at least once a week) tally up 58% of the wine drinking population. Of those, 65% drink wine daily or several time a week.
There's a great deal more basic data, most of it positive for the industry, but what is beginning to take shape as the numbers get parsed and digested is the marked consumption behavior differences based on age.
At our local Friday Farmer's Market in Sonoma, we met Adam Parks. Adam and his wife Laura own Victorian Farmstead , in Sebastopol. We think this the best beef, pork, lamb and chicken we've ever had.
We just renewed our year subscription of their CSA ( Community Supported Agriculture) meat box. Adam is super flexible, and there are 5 or 10 pound boxes of meat every other week that include roasts, steaks and ground meats.
We signed up for 10 pounds …
…we received a surprise visit from a group of people who are going to open a stall in the Municipal Market (in the Lavapiés District of Madrid), selling organic wine, not only in bottles but also loose, by the liter, in recyclable, reusable containers, in some arrangement with their customers. I think that's a great initiative, as these municipal markets are kind of languishing these days - I suppose due to competition from supermarkets, shopping malls and an aging population in the city …

Equally as important, as the Wine Market Council recently discovered , consumers "are largely content with the lower-priced wines they switched to during the recession" -- and many of those lower-priced wines were made possible by the success of Two-buck Chuck.
Intriguingly, the label's success may hamper its future. One reason why Two-buck Chuck is stil $ 1.99 in California (shipping costs raise the price to as much as $ 3.50 in other parts of the country) …
