…where if you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, what would it be? I always answer JJ Prum's Wehlener Sonnenhur Kabinett Riesling. You should bring lot of those.
Carrie: That's your German wine. Didn't we drink some a few weeks ago? That was yummy. How much was that?
Bill: Hey you remembered! It's close to $ 40, but there is good stuff around $ 20 that will do the job. It's great pre-dinner wine when you are cooking and when you eat spicy shrimp …
…results of one producer and a few vineyards, this was clearly yet another very successful year for J.J. Prum, and I'm looking forward to trying some of the other Mosel producers 2011s that are coming into Australia in the next few months.
2011 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett -
Lemon, lime, peach and a tinge of earth on the nose. The palate continues the ripe peach character and has medium carry. Pretty tasty wine, though it doesn't …
…salty, like we do when we get older. Most Mosel Riesling from the top producers like JJ Prum, Willi Schaefer, Weiser-Kunstler, J.J. Christoffel-Erben can all age easily for up to 30 years. An important factor as well in the aging process is the vintage. Vintages that have high acidity will age longer than ones with lower acidity as acidity is a preservative. But, vintages with high ripeness which usually leads to higher residual sugar levels also can last very long even if they don't …
…vice versa. Of course if there is some sudden, drastic change in climate or a unique Kabinett vintage comes along that harkens 2008, 1996, even 2001, then I'm all for a butt ton of Kabinettenn. There will always be traditionalists like JJ Prum and Egon Muller who are famous for making only pradikat wines, and that is fine. For now. It could change. And at JJ Prum they make a stupendous feinherb. Ya never know.
Katharina Prum is the current vintage - if I can put it that way - of a revered Mosel Valley estate that makes some of the finest Riesling in the world. Joh Jos Prum is affectionately known to wine lovers as J.J. Prum, and Katharina is the great-granddaughter of the founder, J.J. She's a straight-shooter: there's none of the hyperbole you find with a lot of wine people. She is a doctor of law who never practised law - just like her father, Manfred, now in his 70s. They …
First among these needs to be the J.J. Prum, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Auslese, 1971. In the vernacular of the day, the wine is epic, though not an # ecpicfail mind you but an epic success. Forty years young, I've had the good fortune of tasting the wine twice this year. The first was in Vegas celebrating a high school friend's fortieth birthday party. I saw it on the list at Lotus of Siam and had to buy it for him. Although he's not that into wine (it does happen from time …
The whites at the table were ok, but none as spectacular as the two that the German intern provided: J.J. Prum and Donnhoff. Each of the wines was a Riesling and each had depth and dimension unrivaled in white wines of any variety. The Prum began with a whiff of sulfur dioxide in the aroma, but after that dissipated, the aroma was of fine flowers and the taste was both crisp and delicate. Rather than delicate, the Donnhoff was assertive, with tingling citrus qualities mixed with an intriguing …
…alluded to earlier we drove to Bonn as our GPS waas not working and had to cancel JJ Prum and Sonora. Sonora we did not get to but we were able to arrange a tasting at the Prum estate with Katharina the next day.
2010 absolutely kills at Prum. No two ways about it. They only de-acidified the one Kabinett they made and everything was what nature gave them. And that " de-assed" Kabinett was fantastic. The wines have a zen quality about them. Serene and focused due to …
…the GPS was not even remotely close to being accurate. I remember sitting in the car in front of the JJ Prum estate the next day and punching the address in and it telling me we were 560 km away. Ridiculous. But we got by on borrowed GPS's thanks to the kindess of Jakob Schneider, Justin Christophe and Danielle and finally Stefan Steinmetz's fiance, the lovely Sammie. So it was GPS musical chairs and I now am an expert on the ubiquitous TomTom, which is the preferred brand …
…to to fruity were very compelling at Schonborn. The almost zen-like quality of the JJ Prum 2010's. Heerkretz GG 2010 from Wagner-Stempel completely obliterating the 2009 while the 2009 was the best wine I have ever had from WS. The brilliant non de-acidified Steinmetz Estate Trocken Liter. The 2009 Hunsruck Spatburgunder GG from Rudolf Furst. Maybe the best Spatburgunder I have ever had.
Well those are my initial thoughts. Stay tuned for more.
