Tain l'Hermitage is the small town that is the centre of the Hermitage appellation in the northern Rhone Valley. It is a twin city with Tournon that lies straight across the Rhone river. The two towns are linked with two bridges, one that is a historic chain bridge and the other is a modern, …

This wine was first made in 2001 in the Jaboulet era, pre-Frey, the idea being to make a Hermitage that is approachable earlier than La Chapelle. Same idea though, the wine comes from similar kinds of vine-age plots, and the wine can come from top parcels of La Chapelle; both wines made by blending to [...]

Still a single vineyard of 40 hectares with old vines at around 50-years-old. Rich soil, big pebbles. One of the original vineyards of Crozes Hermitage. This style is more about complexity and ageing.

…first time in the United States the 2011 Luyton " Hermitage" Rouge for as little as $ 44.99 on the 3-pack. For estate bottled red Hermitage, that is a stunning value. It is even more of a value as the wine is tremendous. Complex, chewy, meaty, deep and rugged like an old school Hermitage. Delas from the 80's comes to mind when I was tasting these. Yet, Michele Luyton also gets a stunning elegance and finesse to her Hermitage and yet it stays bloody, gamey and meaty …

Northern Rhone Syrah from AOP's like Cote Rotie, Hermitage, Cornas, or St. Joseph requires some fortitude. For one, they are not cheap. Second, modern day Northern Rhone Syrahs have a powerhouse reputation; big fat wines with bacon fat and earthy, herbal overtones. While many are benchmark global expressions of the Syrah grape, each bottle usually solidifies their earned reputation for filling, chunky, rich wine. I think when Rich from Sudbury Wine and Spirits …

…shudder to think just what he contemplates when drinks this stuff.

Jaboulet, Hermitage, La Chapelle, 1999

Too modern for my expectations of a Hermitage, but after the losing streak, this an improvement. With sweet tannins and typical black pepper, it's tasty, but one dimensional, especially given the terroir; although as I recall, 1999 was smack in the middle of the Jaboulet family soap opera, so it figures.

…from Abruzzo. Recently we opened two bottles of wine from the 1985 vintage, one an Hermitage and one a Riserva from Abruzzo. The Montepulciano glowed, danced, set one's mind afire. The Hermitage, while lovely, was somber, quiet. Lovely, yes, in a pretty little old lady kind of way. But the wine from Abruzzo was full of sexy, juicy fire. And they say Montepulciano d' Abruzzo cannot age. Maybe it is just that they "do not go gentle into that good night."

I have …

Les Oliviers is so fragrant and fleshy that it wouldn't look out of place in Hermitage (and for a fraction of the price)! Its mineral-infused reds from lieux-dits " Paradis" and " St Joseph" are veritable wine-making triumphs for Syrah in 2012.

One of the Rhône's brightest wine-making talents in this dynamic appellation is Stéphane Ogier . He is the embodiment of the appellation's aspirations, where youth and wisdom, innovation and tradition, …

…could never tell this is from young vines and I am honored for this excellent Crozes Hermitage to be the first one I am offering from Fass Selections. Took me long enough to find one.

The Domaine les Alexandrins is the type of winery I love to represent. Created in 2009 by William and Alexander Sorrel Caso, they treat their vineyards with respect and are incredibly passionate about the work they do. Thomas, who I met and dealt with at the Salon des Vins, speaks perfect English
