For seven years, I was Food & Drink Editor on The Independent's magazine - and it was a job to die for. I tinkered with the luminous words of Tracey MacLeod, Mark Hix and John Walsh; my desk was piled high with delicious freebies; I dined at fancy restaurants and stayed at posh hotels. So why did I give it all up in order to start a tiny bar on a scruffy strip in Tooting, south London, near where I live?

…surprise, I suppose, since so much of our lives now bears the mark of trends and celebrities from Food TV and The Travel Channel and it makes sense that wine magazines would be part of this pattern.

Wine marketers have learned to play the lifestyle card and the Australians are betting heavily on it for their Restaurant Australia wine/food/tourism promotion. Wine magazines are on the band wagon with the rest of the media.

In the series " The Secret Life of a Food Stamp ," Marketplace reporter Krissy Clark traces how big-box stores make billions from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka food stamps. What's more, the wages of many workers at these stores are so low that the workers themselves qualify for food stamps—which the employees then often spend at those big-box stores.

Sponge Cake ( Pão-de-Ló) - Recipe from The Food of Portugal by Jean Anderson

Makes one 10 inch cake

Ingredients:

4 whole eggs

8 egg yolks

1 ¼ cups sugar

1 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour

Pre-heat the oven to 176C ( 350F). Line a greased bunt or tube cake pan with pieces of parchment paper, including the center tube.
