…provenance with these kind of wines - the majority of these bottles were sourced from two cold cellars in Europe where the wines had been purchased on release and stored until being brought over to Australia, 90 years later in some cases!

A few highlights were;

The 1985 Veuve Clicquot Rare Rose Champagne (disgorged 2007) to start was fantastic and a little bit surprising how much I liked it, considering I very often don't care much for Rose Champagne.

The 1947 Violland …

I developed a taste for Albariño in Galicia when I completed the Camino de Santiago by bike in 2003. It did give the wine an unfair advantage, being the drink I celebrated the fact that I no longer had to cycle every day during the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, but I like to think it was just that it's really good wine that's flavoursome and refreshing.

The Martin Codax brand is a reliable source. They opt for a clean fresh varietal approach, no messing, …

…cheese is fried up in local olive oil and was pure YUM! And what meal in this part of Europe would be complete with out the prosciutto? Platters of delicious cured meats were presented, again with the local olive oil, as well as the simple, delicious red and wine wines of the Konoba.

As we sat stuffing ourselves, two types of hand rolled pasta, one with an Italian style tomato sauce, and one with pure heaven, were served family style. I was bursting at the seams, but I couldn't let …

Wine is one of the most sensitive measures of climate change. A rise in temperature during the growing season can easily result - indeed has resulted - in riper grapes and fuller-bodied wines. Drought in areas such as much of Europe where irrigation is banned can leave grapes shrivelled and more.

…light-bodied, red fruit-filled wines with soft tannins. Austria is located in central Europe and borders Germany. Unlike Germany, however, the region generally produces wines that are drier in style and has a climate that can be likened to Burgundy (warmer than Germany). This bodes well for some of Austria's fuller-bodied red grape varieties (e.g., Blaufränkisch) that ripen late and require the warmth and longer growing season to fully develop ripe and complex flavors.

…surprising if the wine in all those still-life paintings was French, since the Dutch dominated trade in Europe in the 17th Century and regularly shipped wine from France to the Baltic nations. Anyway , this wine aged an indeterminate length of time — the winery's website is coy about this matter — in a combination of small French and Eastern European oak barrels and in larger 600-gallon casks. Enticing aromas of black and red currants and raspberries are wreathed with hints of …

…that "Global supplies appear to be tightening simultaneously," with government policies in Europe and Australia deliberately discouraging production, while bad weather in South America had the same effect.

The problem is exacerbated by increasing demand from China for U.S. and particularly California wineries, some of whom are selling a surprisingly high percentage of their top wines there.

Several highly placed producers have openly fretted to me about the shortage, …

…leading Italian producer saw exports salvage its 2012 sales figures . Frescobaldi reported a 3 percent increase last year, despite a 5.1 percent decline in domestic sales. Once again, for everyone writing about wine, prices are a function of supply and demand. If demand decreases, as it has in western Europe over the past two years thanks to the euro crisis, then there must be a matching decrease in supply to raise prices.

…at a high end dry German wine ( Grosses Gewachs). These cost $ 40 in Europe but $60-$90 in the United States. It's very hard to convince a consumer to take a gamble on a wine that costs that much if they are not familiar with it. In my opinion, the high costs associated with the 3 tier system have significantly retarded sales of new categories.
