…underestimated. Indeed, with the unpredictable genius of Messrs Chapoutier and the unpredictability full-stop of Messrs Jaboulet, the Guigals, père et fils , seem to provide a reassuring rock of certainty in the valley. The fact that they sell over six million bottles of their generic Côtes-du-Rhône is impressive indeed but should not distract us from the quality inherent in both these wines, from two of their own vineyards.

Sonoma ( California), Marlborough ( New Zealand), Cotes-du-Rhône ( France), Mallorca ( Spain), and mostrecently Lanzarote ( Canary Islands, Spain). In the Canary Islands at Bodegas Rubicón, David was known for crafting elegant wines, and many of the wines he produced while there received high scores in Guía Peñín, the definitive Spanish wine guide, and all achieved the quality classification of D.O. Youthful purple hue, dry cherry and interesting subtle strawberry with a chalky? curtain. (Seriously, even I don't know exactly what I mean!)

Palate--Some steel out of the gate with chewy, hot tannins and good fruit but all out of balance. However--decanted and given 2-3 hours and this is a down right solid, enjoyable wine--just immature.

Plenty of dusty cherry and a fine bean of strawberry that is unexpected in this 85% Grenache, 15% Syrah Cotes Du Rhone blend. It definitely …

This Cotes Du Rhone has a garnet hue and a bouquet of fresh strawberry juice and light spices with cinnamon.

Palate--Unique velvety texture with stiff acid, bread, yet a bit tight on fruit. Quite unique and at the price point of $ 15, this is a nice, and fruity wine.

A famously up-market Côtes du Rhône, allegedly designated thus because its vines are located on the wrong side of the A7, Coudoulet is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, the balance shared between Syrah, Counoise and some very old Cinsault. Black cherries, plums and kirsch exude, whilst black pepper and spice decorate very neatly.

Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, and two traditional Côtes du Rhone white varieties that are not allowed in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: Viognier and Marsanne.

There is tradition but there is also practicality. A second reason for the different varieties is the viticultural usefulness of varieties that bud and mature in different calendar periods. This spring, for example, we suffered extreme frosts on two consecutive early April mornings. The early budders …
