A most impressive effort from Christine Vernay, showing all the class of this superb vintage. Sainte Agathe is a lieu-dit just to the north of the Condrieu appellation, an east facing enclave with deep-rooted mature Syrah vines planted on a grantic slope. A year in barrique has added depth and nicely-integrated tannins to the summer fruit basket of flavour. Very charming and fin .

Georges Vernay, known affectionately as Le Pape de Condrieu for his almost single -handed feat of rescuing this magnificent appellation from obsolescence, commanded universal respect and adulation amongst producers in the region, and his domaine's repution is now been upheld by his daughter Christine and her husband Paul Ansellem. They manage the domaine's 10ha of Appellation Contrôlée vineyards and a similar area of Vin de Pays, in this case vineyards literally just outside the relevant AOC boundaries.

…The sub region has been building a reputation for simpler, less expensive alternatives to pricey Condrieu Viognier and Syrah from Cote Rotie. A lack of familiarity with Collines Rhodaniennes wines let me assume they were cheaper, but still similarly styled wines.

Jean Gaillard's 2012 Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah not only offers a fresh look at Northern Rhone Syrah, but also offers freshness in its style. It's light red not purple, bright not brooding, and 12% alcohol...not …

…His St-Joseph Syrah cuvee comes from a small parcel overlooking his Condrieu holdings, on impossibly steep slopes in Malleval, where the vines blessed with great exposure and ripening potential.

Ardèche region lies the appellation of St-Joseph. It stretches for 60km due south of Condrieu, tucked against the west bank of the Rhône river. With more than 2,400 acres of vines, St-Joseph is a bastion Syrah, although white grapes such as Marsanne and Roussanne are also allowed in the blend. (A very small amount of white wines based on these two varieties are made.)

Stylistically, St-Joseph reds fall into two categories, which are influenced by a north-south …

Condrieu 2012 for as little as $ 39.99 on the 4-pack. Condrieu has a hard time in the wine world because many are expensive and the quality is variable, but because of the way I work, I can offer serious high quality Condrieu like Christophe's for a minimal tariff. It is tropical, explosive, rich and gentle all at the same time. A beautiful expression of high elevation Viognier and given that high quality Condrieu normally costs $ 60 and up, this is about as big a white no-brainer …

Mediterranean-style food. I learned a lot from Peter. In November, 1991, he held one on Condrieu and Cote Rotie. I mean, wow. That was quite an eye-opener for me, although, looking at my scores, I was more impressed by the idea of tasting these wines than by the wines themselves! I scored them all between 88-91 points, but this may have been because the wines were far too young to appreciate: the vintages were 1987-1990, and I don't know that I properly understood how to look for ageability …

…meal proper, this was just a lot of pre-appetizers... so we took out insurance with another white, a Condrieu 2005 by Gangloff at 90 Euro.

The meal per se began with 3 appetizers based on ingredients from the Catalan countryside:

• green wheat with smoked sardine, grapes, olive oil toasted bread ice cream and yeast foam,

• Olivade - mousse of sharp gordal olives, a fritter of black olives, an ice cream of manzanilla olives, toasted bread with olive oil, fennel jelly, mountain sorrel …

…done, the 2010 Signature Viognier scored a tie with a heralded 2010 Condrieu from E. Guigal Vineyards in the Rhone Valley of France. Unfortunately, we have not tasted the 2010 Signature Viognier; however, the 2011 Viognier went toe to toe with the 2012 Viognier that was offered for a side-by-side comparison. My nod went to the very aromatic 2011 Viognier with its peach flavors and bright acidity. The still-evolving 2012 Viognier is destined to find fans; right now, …

…example at an entry-level price point. Unfortunately, Condrieu isn't cheap. Lastly, Condrieu, in my opinion, is also one of the few examples of Viognier that can gain complexities and evolve with a little patience. Outside of the northern Rhone, most Viognier wines are meant to be consumed in their youth. Click here to find this wine.
