Cockamamie 2011 Calaveras County Syrah - For a California syrah, this one's made in a fairly lean style. Good flavors of dark fruit with a layer of graphite on the finish. Although it is relatively light in body for a syrah, it hangs in through the finish reasonably well. At least I thought it did when I opened it. I had some left over, and I remembered liking it much more the first day. When I tried it the second time, I wasn't overly impressed. ($25, Club Price $ 15)

…label specializes in the production of small lots of [primarily] single-vineyard designated wines from Calaveras County grown fruit and other nearby areas. Scott also makes wine over at Jeff Stai's Twisted Oak Winery. Jeff, along with their famous ' Twisted Chicken' , first introduced me to Calaveras County wine when I first started blogging ( April of 2006) by way of a bottle of Twisted Oak Canterbury Vineyard 2005 Viognier. This region's warm-to-hot climate, …

…this unique wine. Graciano, originally a native of Spain, as grown in Calaveras County and interpreted by Twisted Oak, is a truly wonderful treat. This wine is bright and juicy, making it an easy and obvious companion for most meals. We really enjoyed ours with a spicy chorizo paella dish. Enjoy this 2009 Twisted Oak Graciano now, or cellar for the next few years. Just don't miss out!

…default choice for burgers, but the garlic and pepperiness of the arugula topping seemed to call for something with a bit of spice to match. Syrah could probably work, but zin seemed like a natural. We had the 2007 Chatom Vineyard Zinfandel ($19) from Calaveras County, California. This zin has some refinement as opposed to being a fruit bomb, but still had the heft to work with the burger, and some spice to pick up the topping.

…we dug deep into the cellar for this gem. In 2009 I, along with a bunch of other bloggers, invaded Calaveras County, specifically the town of Murphys, CA. One of our stops on that trip was Newsome Harlow, a favorite of mine from my first visit to Murphys. So this wine has spent a bit of time since then chilling in my basement waiting for me to open it up. The 2006 Newsome Harlow Train Wreck retails (at the time) for $ 19, has a real cork closure, and clocks in at 14.4%.

Four takeaways …
