It will surprise many to hear that Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon is, in most years, the first of the luxury Penfolds wines to sell out each year. It spends 16 months in new American oak. First produced in 1964 but not made between 1970 and 1975. Penfolds Bin 707 is only made in vintages [...]

Penfolds Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon is a single vineyard (and indeed, single block) Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in all new French oak. The 2008 was the first release. It was "created to reflect Penfolds' contemporary winemaking approach, emphasising both regionality and maturation of cabernet sauvignon in fine-grained French oak".

In contrast to Bin 707, Bin 169 is the expression of the fruit and terroir from one single region, Coonawarra, perhaps the region more closely associated with Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia than any other. Matured for 14 months in new French oak, contemporary style showing both regionality and maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon in fine grained French oak.

The Cabernet Sauvignon reflection of Grange. A blend of fruit from five vineyard sites, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, and Adelaide Hills. A truly outstanding vintage that takes Bin 707 to a new level, with winemaker Peter Gago describing the wine ‘ Gloss and sheen (‘sparkle'), yet with depth and structure'.

The Riesling ( Bin 51) was a lot of fun to taste packed with clean and mineral, floral notes suggesting honeysuckle, jasmin and also a touch of tropical fruit. On the palate this wine was full and ripe with plenty of lemon, a touch of spice and a rich, mouth-coating finish.

The Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz was very classic in the way it displayed a restrained character not often common with Barossa Shiraz wines. Crushed blackcurrant fruit lead to a herbal edge suggesting thyme or rosemary …

…port, yet of course not the same finesse as the vintage character was over $ 80 and this Bin No 27 sells for about $ 20. Yet it was really delicious with concentrated fruit and a firm structure.

We tasted the 2009 Vintage Croft and the 2009 Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage 2009 side by side ... price at that level was fairly similar (85 - 100 dollars) and though the Taylor Fladgate had a longer reputation, I really enjoyed the Croft with its lifted elegant …

Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2009 , New Zealand 426601 13% XD 750 ml $ 15.95

Drink Wine and Giggle Gals rated this wine as 81/100 with the following review: Given its reasonable price and reasonable taste, what's in Villa Maria's private bin makes a good house wine. Lynne found it a bit tinny, but that's because she brushed her teeth prior to our tasting. (The Drink Wine and Giggle Gals have yet to find a wine that pairs …
